Concluding Remarks: DrWaliurRehman; Professor Department of Management Sciences, Sarhad University Peshawar Pakistan Alternate Solutions Institute organized launching ceremony of Global Go To Think Tanks report 2015 of ‘Think Tanks Civil Society Program' University of Pennsylvania in Pakistan at National University of Modern Languages Peshawar campus. Experts from academia, policy practitioners, students and general public were invited to attend the ceremony. The topic of the seminar was ‘Think Tanks Matter to Policy Makers and Public' in the socio-economic and political context of Pakistan and the world in general. People from different walks of life participated in the seminar. Dr Raza Ullah President Alternate Solutions Institute introduced GGTTT report and its background. He explained the importance of the work to rank effective think tanks in the world. He informed participants that in year 2015 report Alternate Solutions stood among the top three think tanks in Pakistan and the only private initiative in Pakistan (the other two Sustainable Development Policy Institute SDPI and Pakistan Institute of International Affairs; both are government funded think tanks). Alternate Solutions Institute stood 24th in ranking in South Asia and Pacific. Panelists were invited to discuss the theme ‘Think Tank Matters'. DrQadir Bakhsh Baloch chaired the session. DrFayyaz Ali Shah explained the participants about history, contributions and future of think tanks in Pakistan and in world in general. He elaborated the difference in political parties, civil society organizations and think tanks. DrFayyaz explained the audience how think tanks could play its effective role in the world. He gave examples of initial think tanks and their growth across the world especially in US. Panelist DrShahid Jan Kakakhel contested the future of think tanks and elaborated how government would behave to the emerging role of think tank in the country. He referred to the increased interests of general public of think tanks role in Pakistan. He said that it is painful that Pakistani intellectuals and institutions have shown little interests in supporting think tanks especially in political, economics and other policy issues. He said success of such event shows that future of think tank in Pakistan is bright. DrGohar Zaman the last panelist talked on the socio-cultural role of ideas and the future of think tanks in Pakistan. He linked think tanks and ideas with the history of rationalism. He said science has changed everything including human perception of this world. He gave few examples and the changes he observed in Pakistani Pakhtun environment and changing norms and linked them to the acceptance of rationalism across the world which is an indicator to the major potential role of think tanks in the world in general and particularly in Pakistan. Regarding role of think tanks, he welcomed the move of Alternate Solutions Institute to introduce audience in Pakistan with the great work of think tanks across the world and especially appreciated the ‘Think Tanks Civil Society Program (TTCSP)' for their efforts to document and acknowledge the whole array of think tanks' work across the world. He also appreciated the work of Alternate Solutions Institute and congratulated for the position among top think tanks in South Asia and Pacific and specifically in Pakistan in GGTTT report 2015. DrQadar Bakhsh Baloch chaired the session; in his comments he discussed different roles of think tanks in the human history. He said that think tanks played negatively and positively both. He discussed different data sources which indicate that wars and destruction are mainly supported by think tanks in the recent past and also some of the think tanks kept criminal silence over their governments' bad policies. But simultaneously there are many think tanks who served humanity and helped them in raising their quality of life and protection of their rights. He asked TTCSP to include only those think tanks in the list who are serving humanity and working for peace. He especially appreciated the pioneering work of Alternate Solutions Institute in defending citizens' rights and creating awareness among thinking people about restricting role of government in public lives. DrWaliurRehman in the concluding remarks elaborated think tanks, civil societies in Pakistani context and explained the future of think tanks work in Pakistan. In the last session, Dr Raza Ullah announced the launch of ‘Center for Public Policy Studies' a new program of Alternate Solutions Institute and discussed the future plans and relate it with the theme of seminar ‘Think Tanks Matter'. He thanked the panelists, the participants and the Manager Creative Work Mr. Adnan Sohail for designing logo for this event.
